Jim Goddard

Jim Goddard is a recognized leader in healthcare cyber security and risk.  After graduating with honors from West Point and serving as an officer in the United States Army, Jim has specialized in cyber security at Kaiser Permanente, IBM, Hewlett-Packard (HP), and Foxcatch, a company he co-founded.  He is currently the chief information security officer (CISO) for CommonSpirit Heath, one of the largest integrated healthcare providers in the United States.  He is also on the board of advisors for ClearSky and Glilot Capital, venture capital funds focusing on cyber security.

Since 2014, Jim has help CISO positions in health care at both Kaiser Permanente and CommonSpirit.  His role is to mature security capabilities as the organization leverages technology to improve the affordability and quality of healthcare.  Jim leverages a risk-based approach to protect a complex and dynamic technology landscape that is the backbone for CommonSpirit’s clinical and research operations, supporting over 2000 hospitals and medical offices and 150 thousand employees.  In an industry highly targeted by cyber threats, Jim has integrated new security capabilities to include 24/7 threat monitoring centers, incident response preparedness, data protection controls and modernized access management with multifactor and contextual authentication.  Jim closely monitors and influences emerging cyber technology as an advisor for the ClearSky and Glilot venture capital funds.  Jim’s leadership as a CISO has generated industry recognition in InformationWeek and the Healthcare Sharing & Analysis Center (H-ISAC).

Prior to becoming a CISO, Jim led a cyber security consulting practice as a managing principal for Hewlett-Packard where he built security operations centers for some of the largest, most well-regarded companies in the world.  While at HP, Jim increased software and services revenue by over 400% for his region.

From 2012-2013, Jim was chief executive officer of Foxcatch, a cyber security startup, and won a prestigious research grant with the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).  At Foxcatch, Jim completed a first ever mobile security application to authenticate users with behavioral analytics and no passwords.

From 1996-2012, Jim held many leadership and technical positions in cyber security for IBM, culminating in running IBM’s 10 global security operations centers that protected over 2500 clients with security monitoring and response services. During Jim’s tenure, IBM attained coveted status in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Managed Security Services Providers, a position IBM continues to maintain.

Jim holds a bachelor’s degree from West Point, a master’s degree in telecommunications from the University of Colorado and an executive leadership certificate from the Harvard Business School.  Jim holds patents in cyber security, and he has been an adjunct professor teaching cyber security at the University of Colorado.
